I really want to buy a 2011 iMac and it's already annoying I can't use it as my monitor for my gaming PC. Now I can't even install an SSD without any problems like fan or temp issues for the HDD it comes with and the installed SSD. I want an SSD but not the SSD Apple uses.

I'm a long time custom PC user and those grudges you have with the iMac really took me awhile to look past. I built 3-4K custom PCs and used HP's 30 (ZR30W) for my screens. I dumped all of that for my new iMac. It was a big shock but I'm finding that I can be happy on an iMac. lol. My friends and business partners hardly believe it. Now they walk into my home office and they see an iMac, iPhone, and iPad2, and with these 3 devices I am more efficient running my business and enjoying more free time with my family. Over the weekend I was easily able to move my iMac upstairs to do some work while playing with the kids (wife was out of town), a luxury that I was not able to do with my custom PCs. As far as a monitor for gaming, you can use the 27" screen for gaming with an add on piece of hardware. I myself just use a 32 led sharp 1080p for ps3/apple tv and leave my iMac just for computer use.

Any news on your homemade SSD update so far?

It's working great. I do wish I had 2 SSD's one for each OS. I don't like sharing OS's with 1 drive. lol. I may convert the 256GB into latest Lion build and just use the stock 1tb for WIN7. i'm a big fan of win7, but i'm finding myself liking osx more everyday. i use google apps mainly it's nice cause any OS everything synchs up so swapping between OS's are devices all the info is the same.

That's not really my issue. With a 2010 iMac I can use it as my gaming PC monitor using the MDP and slap on a SSD with no issues.

I don't mind not being able to use it as a monitor for a gaming PC but being able to add a SSD without issues is a big deal. I don't want to take it apart to only have it 99% working with temp/fan issues. I would get it with the SSD option but I don't want what Apple provides.

Will Boot Camp allow you to choose between both internal drives when partitioning, or only the primary?

SSD TEMP: I did notice the temps for my SSD are very high, but the drive itself is cold and I know it's not actually hot. I read somewhere that the Y Power Splitter may be the reason. Here is a screen shot.

My technician installed the Crucial 256GB M4 SSD Sata II for me, in addition to the original 2TB HDD on my iMac 27" 2011. Since installation, the imac is super fast but I have two annoying issues:
1. The fan is working non stop.
2. I sometimes get the "beach balls" that freeze the imac for q few seconds.

Any ideas how to resolve these issues? superpalmtree? Anyone?
Have these issues been resolved?
