I could imagine a new iMac lineup where the M2 is the entry model and the M3 (Pro) is an upgrade.

Having the M2 Pro as an option would be extremely weird, though.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple designates the new redesigned OLED iPad pros as the first product to get M3.
It has been a long time since the iPad has had a spotlight on it, and if the rumors are true that it’s getting a total redesign and a new aluminum keyboard case it’s probably going to have a good bit of marketing behind it.
Being the first M3 product certainly wouldn’t hurt

This is very interesting. I also think they could release the M3 from the “top to bottom”. Maybe starting with the M3 Max and Pro and then release the M3

Oh I guarantee this isn’t the case. Maybe consumers aren’t buying them a lot, but iMacs are very popular in elementary schools and middle schools. Well, at least when I was in school like 15-20 years ago.
That’s a long time ago. I think they buy iPads nowadays.

I find this hard to believe.

Why would they release an M2 iMac this late in the cycle?

No one is going to want it knowing M3 is around the corner.

Why is the M3 'around the corner'? Even when it comes, they wouldn't want to introduce it into a low-volume desktop that doesn't need any of the likely efficiency improvements.

M3 will come to MacBooks, first.

I really wish the AIO form factor would just die. The monitor will almost surely outlive the CPU and then it becomes useless. At the very least Apple, and others, should ensure the technology exists to use an outdated AIO as a second screen.

As a long term user of iMacs, I thoroughly enjoyed the AIO for over a decade. But now, I'm fully with you on this topic. AIO was historically a higher value proposition from Apple in the buy... but terrible at the end when any one part went bad... or Apple just deciding to vintage it... made ALL of it basically have to go. Often a great screen with probably years of use left had to be tossed because there were no options to keep using that part.

I won't wish it away though as there are some who have their own reasons for wanting it- whether logical or illogical to others. For them, I hope a great AIO keeps being available while it makes sense to make them.

The next-generation 24-inch iMac will likely be available with M2 and M2 Pro chip options, Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 6E support, and Bluetooth 5.3 support, according to a report today from Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

Hello-Tim-Cook-iMac.jpeg

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has repeatedly claimed that the next 24-inch iMac will be equipped with the M3 chip, so it's unclear if the information reported today is accurate. It is possible that Apple's plans have changed, but no other sources have indicated that the iMac will be updated with M2 and M2 Pro chips as of yet.

Mac Otakara notes that some custom 24-inch iMac configurations are facing up to one-month shipping delays on Apple's online store in the U.S., but this has been the case for a while now, and there is no guarantee that an iMac refresh is imminent.

Last month, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said it was unlikely that Apple would release any new MacBooks with the M3 chip this year, but a new iMac has not been ruled out this year. Apple is not expected to hold an event this October, so if there were to be a new iMac this month, it would likely be announced in a press release on Apple's website.

All in all, rumors about which chip the new iMac will have and when the computer will be released remain in a state of flux. The only certain thing is that October continues to roll along without any product announcements from Apple so far.

The current 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip was released in May 2021.

I wonder if the new talk of using M2 Pro and not a M3 is because of the new iPhone with a 3nm chip and heat issues. That 3nm that was suppose to reduce heat and might of turned out to be the same or run hotter.

I've actually been suggesting this for many weeks now. If there is going to be a new iMac- video event or press release- it should be M2 instead of M3. Why?

The wonder product has been announced to launch in early 2024 with M2. Does it make sense to establish M3 as the "latest & greatest" for months but then roll out the revolutionary wonder in 2024 with "old" technology? Of course, the remedy for this could be to upgrade the wonder with M3 too.

This quarter is the most lucrative quarter for Apple. Roll out ONE Mac with M3 and buyers attuned to such things will immediately see all other Macs as "old" technology. At least some of them would be likely to defer a potential buy in this quarter to wait for the Mac they want to go M3 too.

Roll out M2 in iMac now and the marketing spin is that "now all Macs now have our "latest & greatest" tech- the mighty M2 processor. Buy now!!!"

No reason to defer other Mac purchases. No undermining the "gee whiz" of M2 Vpro with a many-months-established M3. Only through a consumer lens- especially a consumer wanting an iMac- does a M3 upgrade make sense in this quarter. Through the money lens from Apple Inc's perspective, M2 seems most likely to maximize mainstream revenue (only those deeply in tune might wait for an M3 iMac version, which then might be upwards of 2+ years away, based upon M1 to M2)

32” 5k IMAC please.

While I've always preferred the AIO iMac and have used them exclusively alongside a MacBook, I really hope in a few years, once the M1 iMac starts showing age, Apple allows it to be used as a display. Even if they limit it to only Apple devices made after 20xx I would settle with that...

I came across a post a few days ago where someone turned their old 27" iMac into a 5K display, I wonder if that would be possible with the Mx iMac?

Maybe Apple is staggering the generations of M chips so the latest node process is focused on high-volume products?

i guess i have to finally pulling the trigger on imacs with M2 after serving my 2017 imac for years.

and....

For the love of GOD, apple,
PLEASE! this time...
update your apple MAGIC MOUSE! for crying out loud.

Size matters, 24" is a bad option, for most 27" users

If 21" became 24", the implication is 27" becomes approx. 30" when it is re$$urected... but anyone interested in the latter should brace themselves for the pricing. I strongly doubt it will be like the old "starting at..." value pricing "we" remember. Instead, I suspect it will be more like the previous iMac Pro pricing. Don't recall that? Click if you dare...

full

My best guess is that iMac "bigger" DOES resurrect probably in 2024-25... branded "PRO" with M3 PRO & MAX options and pricing towards the former iMac Pro instead of anything close to ASD, now that ASD has established that many will pay the former "starting at..." price of iMac 27" for only the monitor... needing to then add on Apple fees for a whole PRO or MAX Mac + keyboard + mouse too.

If this is true, then it's likely a change of plans.

Seems like it's late in the game for M2.

I'm guessing this signifies delays of M3, so Apple is dropping M2 and M2 Pro in the iMac since it's been over 2.5 years without any kind of update and is a popular machine.
