Sometimes when i put a disc in the imac it won't recognize it. When it does this I can't eject it or anything. I have to restart the machine. It does this on cdr's, dvd's or install discs. What causes this? Everything else is perfect so I hesitate to take it in.

Is it possible that the disc itself is damaged?

If you are still under warranty or have AppleCare I'd take it in.

    Have you checked out System Preferences > CD's & DVD's ?

It's not a damaged cd and I have checked the settings. I was trying to avoid lugging a 27 down to the apple store.

Have you tried looking at it in Disc Utility (Applications/Disc Utility) - you could try mounting the disc in there?
I just had the same problem, and simply opening Disc Utility made the disc appear on my desktop. Isn't an ideal workaround but beats restarting.

My late-2009 iMac does this. It won't have the problem for months, and then starts rejecting RANDOM CD/DVD I put in the drive, including the OS X install discs. I just have to keep feeding the disc in repeatedly until it takes.

It has good and bad days. It's so intermittent it drives me crazy. The same disc that will be rejected 30 times will then work fine for 6 months. GAH! Just yesterday it rejected the OX Install disc 3 times, working on the fourth. And today? It's rejecting it continuously. But I put another game DVD in there and it mounts immediately, that game DVD was rejected last year. LOL!

How quickly does this occur after a restart? If the Apple tech doesn't see the issue they probably can't do anything about it.

Is there any dirt on the discs you are putting in to the system? Although this shouldn't be causing an inability to use the eject button. This sounds like a real hardware issue.

I do recommend bringing it in however, get a record of the problem. And make sure if you have to bring it in again, always refer to the previous visit(s) where they couldn't find the issue.

This happens to my early 2009 iMac all the time. You put the disc in and it's like the drive doesn't even attempt to read it. Then you open up system profiler and it says there's no DVD drive in the computer. Restart the computer and voila, it's back to normal.

I'd get it replaced, but the problem is that it's a difficult thing to recreate. You could put 100 discs in and have them all be fine, and then there's one disc that causes this problem (although the disc is in new condition).

I have this exact same problem on my 2010 iMac. There is not recognition that any thing is in the drive. It happens once or twice a year; I go into disc utilities and the computer recognizes that there is something in the drive. Now it has done it and nothing is working; disc utilities, rebooting. What can I do?
