this sucks!! This is a replacement iMac for a G5 that had a sleep issue. My iMac won't sleep, just goes blank and I get the solid light. Looks like it is trying as the light is somewhat fading but I can still hear the fans spinning.

Funny thing is, when I try to manually sleep it from the apple menu it takes about 45 seconds for anything to happen. I can sleep it, go open a program and start working and then all of a sudden it will sleep.

I am so exasperated right now. I dealt with this stupid problem for the past two years to the point were Apple finally replaced my G5 now this!?!?!?!?

So you had this same problem with another machine?... What peripherals do you have plugged in? What apps are running? Have you tried the usual SMU reset? If you immerse it in warm milk it might not sleep, but it'll probably shut down. :)

Have a look at System Preferences>Accounts>Log In items. There are some funky drivers that you may have migrated to your new machine.

Well, I have some experience with this unfortunately. I have reset the PRAM, CMU, and done an archive and install, lets see if that resolves it.

okay, doing an archive and install fixed it but now my powerbook is having sleep issues. Maybe it has something to do with the lastest updates? No one else having these issues?

    iMac won't sleep

I discovered that my wife's iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo) and my MacBook Pro (Intel Core Duo) both would not sleep and stay slept. They are the only two computers on our network, and they woth have backup drives & bluetooth peripherals.

After some trial & error, I discovered that our powered USB 2.0 hubs were the culprit. I have my Bakcup drive and my memory card reader on mine, and my wife's had our printer and scanner on hers.

I unplugged the USB hub, slept the machines, and they stayed slept. As soon as I plug the hub back in, it comes awake, and will not sleep with it plugged in. My wife's backup drive is an old 4G ipod (1st gen, Firewire 400), and it does not wake the computer when slept.

I still need to check this theory with nothing plugged into the hubs, but until then it's a start. At least I know it's not the computers. If it's not just the hub, it is weird that a scanner or a printer would wake a computer from sleep. I've even turned the printer off, thinking that since it's a shared printer that might have something to do with it. I have an old Apple Airport with no USB port, so I have to share the printer through her computer.

At any rate, if you have a USB hub plugged in, and are having this issue, try it out.

    Take care
