Our iMac history:

17" G5 iMac, bought 12/04. Ran 6 years then power supply failed (the defective capacitor problem). I gave it to a friend who replaced all the capacitors to get it running and then gave it to his lady friend.

20" C2D iMac, bought 11/06. Display failed under Applecare. Hard drive recently failed (I had given the system away).

24" C2D iMac, bought 7/08. Used by my (late) father, now my daughters computer. No repairs.

24" C2D iMac, bought 6/09. My wife's. No repairs.

27" i7 iMac, bought 11/09. No repairs.

I'd guess a 5 year life based on the older 3 systems. I don't consider that particularly good. I'm still using an 8 year old Dell (no repairs) and had two others that I kept using for 7 and 8 years with no repairs. But they run much cooler. The heat kills.

I have a 7 months old 27" iMac with i7 and I already get this notorious grey smudge on upper right of the screen. Painful to look at when everything is white. And knowing it's there is even worse and distractive.

But the worst part is it spreads like cancer overtime!! On the beginning it was a small spot and now it's getting longer and longer. Should've buy a macPro instead :(

Other than that my iMac works like a charm, quick, great for working n gaming. I'm sure the CPU side can have 3 or 4 years. But the display? I doubt it

Do you have Apple Care and have you had it looked at? I had the same spreading issue, had it inspected, replaced the LCD, and Bob's yer uncle. Free and done in my own home.

I've had my iMac for 6 years now, and we have never had a problem. Apart from one time I had to wipe the drive due to a power out when a firmware update was in progress. My dad just got a new iMac and he hasn't had any problems with that. Go with an iMac.

My biggest (only) issue with my iMac Mid-2007 is that darn slot-in DVD drive.

First one died after 1.5 years. Got it replaced, fortunately on Amex Extended Warranty, because this *****'s expensive.

Now I'm basically not using the built-in drive because I fear it might wear out again. So I bought an external DVD drive for ripping DVDs.

My iMac 21.5" '09 has been nothing but problems since i've had it either.. only had it 2 years.

These threads are useless. They just turn into anecdotes. Here's mine: my '06 MacBook is junk; it has been falling to pieces since the day I bought it. On the other hand, my 1979 Apple II is in perfect* condition! From that, I deduce that Apple computers will last an average of 19.5 years.

Devices fail. Not many, but some. It sucks when they do, but it has no bearing on how long someone else's will last.

*Really. It's like new. Fired it up recently and played some Breakout!
