Just gotr back from a trip abroad,, looking to download images from my iphone 13 pro via image capture..
I used portraite mode as well as normal camera it seems the ones in portrait mode have created 2 files... the same image but with "portrait" mode applied and the same image without the blury background.. this is essentially just doubling the size of my folder... what's going on here? seems dumb.. how do I make it so it just downloads the portrait mode image?

Portrait mode can be edited after the fact, even changing the depth of focus. That requires more info from the sensor, which “usually” is just built into the photo. Guessing either you have Compatibility enabled, or are using an old version of macOS.

So I have to manually delete each and every photo that was shot in portrait mode that has a duplicate?

You don't HAVE to do anything.

If you don't want those duplicates (and don't mind losing the ability to edit the effect), that's probably your best bet though.

So I have to go through 500 photos and delete 500 duplicates? Yes I don't want a folder that is 2gb big when 1gb will do.

You have to do whatever you have to do.

As I mentioned, this is either due to Compatibility being enabled, or to an older version of macOS. You haven't said which it is.

If it's Compatibility, you can turn that off for FUTURE photos but that won't affect what's already been taken.

If it's an outdated version of macOS, you also have the option of upgrading (macOS or computer, whichever is necessary).

One other possibility, I suppose, is some weirdness with Image Capture. I've not heard any other reports but I haven't used it myself in years so maybe it's just escaped my notice. If you're running macOS 26.3 and you don't have Compatibility enabled in Camera on your iPhone, perhaps you just need to import via Photos instead of Image Capture.

I think I had the option on to save original photos as well as the portrait mode.. I noticed in editing in the phone you can turn the aperture off, which essentially removes all of the blur / depth of field, showing that it's just a fancy filter..

Exactly.

That type of editing is also available on a modern Mac, as described in the link on my first reply. But, the Mac needs the "original" image to be able to do that type of edit.
