Hi people,
I've recently bought a Canon MX850 All-in-One Printer. I plan to use the printer to scan my documents in my three full filing cabinets to save space. This also provides a permanent backup. However, after scanning each folder of documents, there are only two options: 1) save individual file, or 2) save the whole folder as one multipage pdf file. Unfortunately, there is no option to save the files in order as xxxx page 1.pdf and xxxx page 2.pdf and so on. Also, some of my documents have writing on them, and when the scanning finishes, the written parts look very faint, almost unreadable.
So, I searched the internet for a solution, looking for batch brightness/contrast image converters. I found several applications, but they adjusted the color as well as the brightness and contrast. I wanted only the brightness and contrast adjusted, as they would make the written words clear. After a week or so, I found an automator action that could split the multipage pdf into several images, which could be of many formats, such as gif. The action that I downloaded was called "Render PDF pages as images". It's free, and somewhere on the apple downloads page. I also downloaded an application called GraphicConverter, which adjusts the brightness and contrast for files. GraphicConverter came with an automator action also, called "Brightness", which adjusts only the brightness and contrast of an image.
I've already set up everything, and have even made a workflow for three situations: 1) for if the entire multipage pdf file contains all written documents, 2) for if the entire multipage pdf file contains all typed documents, and 3) for if some of the multipage pdf contains typed and some contains written. For situation 1, I would first split the pdf (because I want separate pages, and also because the brightness/contrast converter can not convert pdf files), and then adjust the brightness and contrast of all the images, all in one step. For situation 2, I would split the multipage pdf file and not make any adjustments. For situation 3, I would first split the multipage pdf file, and then apply the brightness/contrast adjustments to only the gif files that need it (written files).
The only problem, however, that I've come across is with the "make sequential" action in Automator. Basically, since I have 3 file cabinets full of files, I will be scanning for a long time. When first using the workflow, everything works fine, but if I use it again without quitting automator or shutting down my computer, the sequence gets all messed up. For example, the first time I used the workflow, the sequence was 1, 2, 3, 4. Which is exactly what I wanted. The second time, however, I got 5, 6, 7, 8. Is there a way to fix this so that every time it starts with 1?
If this needs more detail, please ask. Please help. Thanks.
Will
