Taiwanese site Apple.pro is continuing to receive images of parts for the claimed next-generation iPhone, this time posting a picture of the headphone jacks for the device in both black and white.

Always looking out for aesthetics, Apple has utilized separate black and white headphone jacks for its existing iPhone models in the respective colors, maintaining the consistency of appearance even for the small amount of the interior of the jack visible in the absence of connected headphones.

Maintaining this consistency in the next-generation iPhone would appear to be less important given that the headphone jack is located on the aluminum edge of the handset rather than in the colored back wrapping around the edges found in existing models, but Apple appears to be continuing to match headphone jack colors to those of the handsets.

Wait, I don't see it?

Oh, there it is! A black one and a white one!

I'm sure glad they put those circles with the words white and black next to them; I might never have figured out which piece they were talking about.

Any way to tell from these pics about the headphones as antenna for a possible FM capable iPhone?

Headphones as an antenna? I doubt anything could be ascertained about that from this photo - but who needs FM when you have 3G? NPR.app, pandora, etc. No commercials and better quality.

Not saying I do this any other time, but when I drive to work I listen to the radio instead of my music library for the talk show in the morning. In the AM its pretty much all I want to hear. I realize I'm driving at this point, so a tuner in my phone is not needed, but I'm sure many people ride trains, etc. on their way to work & may be in the same situation.

But in reality, an FM tuner is really only a few components, so why not? (Yes I realize real estate is limited, but you can prob fit it somewhere)

But the FM wouldn't draw down your data allotment nor drain the battery nearly as much.

The 3GS uses the Broadcom BCM4325 chip which has a FM receiver in it. So presumable the 3GS can do FM reception. Its just lack of software.

That’s pretty crazy—it’s a hole! I guess that’s attention to detail for you.

People do use radios for sure—but (as when you drive to work), they already HAVE radios most places. So it’s probably not worth finding the hardware space nor developing the software interface.

Stupid

This coloring of the jack for "attention to detail" is just too much.
As a stockholder I'd rather Apple made them all black instead of having to manufacture two versions and so increasing the parts cost (even if only by a little).

This is the equivalent of Toyota stamping their logo on the top of all the bolts in a car. The VAST majority of people who own one won't notice, and of those who do even fewer will care.

In the end it just drive up the cost to manufacturer the hardware.

Thank god you're not in charge.

Looks like we've found yet another non-candidate for a job at Apple. Congrats!

Obviously as a stockholder, you've failed to realize why the company you've invested in has been doing so well over the past 12 years or so. You might not care about this -- and it's not likely to increase the sales of this model in any way. But these little details add up in the mind of a consumer. When they go to buy their next device, Apple will stick out in their mind as a company who sweats the small details. If all other things are equal, Apple will end up winning.

My suggestion? Learn more about the companies you invest in and why they are successful. Don't just spout off bad advice in the name of making more money -- Apple has been doing just fine without your advice and has been making boatloads of cash.

It sickens me a little that something like this is considered "news."

It's page 2 news. If it was front page news, then I'll be with you. But now... Meh...

Other than that, my reaction is like "WTF". It adds no worth to the consumer. And to the repairers who might see it to fix it... They won't even care.

Well it confirms what we seem to already know which is that the iPhone will still have a white version. Other than that I'm in complete agreement with you.

Yeah cam quality, screen quality, sizes, speed, uhh... lots more.

we know the resolution of the screen. double that of the current (4x as many pixels and the highest pixel count per square inch of any cellphone display)
there are rumors on the cam. correct me if i'm wrong but i recall rumors ranging from 5mp to 8mp

size - FULLY documented by the comparisons etc. i can't tell you the HxWxD in mm off the top of my head, but the info is available (since manufacturers have already made cases, it's rather detailed info)

speed - we know it's the same processor as iPad and same RAM. the only difference is it might be clocked lower. but we know the hardware.

I think the 'iPhone horse' has been dead since April, and beat so much since then it's mush...

Really the damn Jack...

stick to stocks rather than material processing and manufacturing. these plastics that are being used are pretty much equal cost and run through the same die during manufacturing. the only major investment creating multiple color ways in a product is the separation in factory for manufacturing. i doubt that is a concern to apple. as other have stated, apple is doing quite fine. also, creating variations of a product help with marketing. white and black appeals to multiple markets rather than one. that means more people will buy the product. you would be surprised how much color can factor in to someone who would want some htc phone only offered in black when, "hey that iphone comes in white too. thats different." notice how more and more companies are introducing colors into their product line. blackberry is one example.

If you think that, why are you looking not at macrumors.com, but macrumors.com/iphone? You had to go to the iPhone specific page to find this story!

It's obviously not dead since you and I are both here.

But...since you mentioned beating a dead horse:

WOW, I love that Apple pays this much attention to detail. Nice to know someone does! :D

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the colouring of the jacks being excessive. No consumer would care about the colour of interior plastics especially when they probably won't be able to even remove the battery cover. Unless it's like the HTC Evo where the inside is red and the exterior has bits of red trim, the extra effort needed to colour match the headphone jack on the iPhone is excessive. While Apple's attention to detail is mostly impeccable, no customer's view on Apple is going to get swayed by this particular detail. I say they should have made it grey!
