Thank god you're not in charge.

I agree. Seriously.

Ignoring the fast that his is just ridiculous nit-picking, Apple would obviously negotiate their price with their vendor based on the total quantity. That some are black and some are white is of no concern to the vendor at the quantities Apple is dealing with.

And the guys Toyota example is even more ludicrous. He clearly doesn't realize (and yet is the type that knows EVERYTHING he needs to know) that having "TOYOTA" etched into the die that is stamping the bolt heads ANYway doesn't add a THING to the cost.

In small quantities, sure, that would be extravagant because you could just use an off-the-shelf die. In the quantities someone like Toyota uses, they would have dies specifically for their own use anyway.

If the guy HAS to bitch and moan about something, I wish he'd pick something legit.

Fake...

Why would Apple make use of a colored part that is not visible from the outside? Only for extra costs :D.

No really, this makes no sense at all! It's a hidden part!!

Indeed a slow news day :p

But the FM wouldn't draw down your data allotment nor drain the battery nearly as much.

Running Pandora and NPR News for a few hours a week only runs up about 400MB of data usage on my iPhone. I don't think streaming radio is what is going to put anyone over the data cap.

The idea is that when you look into the headphone it is the correct colour.

But I hate to bust the rumour bubble but Apple already does this, my white iPhone is white into the headphone jack. This is nothing new.

This coloring of the jack for "attention to detail" is just too much.
As a stockholder I'd rather Apple made them all black instead of having to manufacture two versions and so increasing the parts cost (even if only by a little).

This is the equivalent of Toyota stamping their logo on the top of all the bolts in a car. The VAST majority of people who own one won't notice, and of those who do even fewer will care.

In the end it just drive up the cost to manufacturer the hardware.

Then you should wait for Dell to make a phone.. That ought to be pretty plain and simple, like their pc's...

Please don't ever work for Apple. Thanks!

Yeah, but your case is white! A black one would probably noticed (like in daylight or another strong light source)...
I'm speaking about the so called new 'iPhone 4G', which is like the iPods and first generation iPhone in metal. And until the iPhone 4G is official released we can't know if their will be a white one. All the rumored photos I've seen the front is black and the backside is metal again... Ahh, we will see soon ;).

BTW: How do you look inside your headphone jack  Sorry, I'm with you ;)

I just hope they don't change the ports to something else like a different size head phone port and a docking port. Then you'd have to buy some kind of adapter to work with your older stuff

So I guess you never looked very closely at the difference between the black MacBook and the white one? All the ports on the black one are black and the white one has white ports. It make for a cleaner looking product. It's these details that make me know that they do sweat every detail.

As for the Toyota part... so why does apple bother to put their logo on all their parts? Why does VW/Audi have the logo on EVERY part? So they know it is a genuine part. It is part of quality control. It is one extra step so they know the part is made to their specs.

Attention to detail is apples thing.

What I don't understand is the constant iPhone porn, all the little bits being passed as news, we all have a pretty good idea of what's coming. Maybe I'll just start visiting the forums july-January... Cause it seems like we've seen this all before.

The colors really are different if you care to pay attention to detail.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the colouring of the jacks being excessive. No consumer would care about the colour of interior plastics especially when they probably won't be able to even remove the battery cover. Unless it's like the HTC Evo where the inside is red and the exterior has bits of red trim, the extra effort needed to colour match the headphone jack on the iPhone is excessive. While Apple's attention to detail is mostly impeccable, no customer's view on Apple is going to get swayed by this particular detail. I say they should have made it grey!

I'd like to add to this - Even if I had a white iPhone, I would prefer to have a black headphone jack. If you think a white headphone jack is a good idea, go look into the headphone jack on an old white ipod. I don't want to see that muck! Of course, Apple does want you to replace your phone every year. Maybe this is just another step in that strategy!

Why do people find that cool? "face palm" its stupid.

People do use radios for sure—but (as when you drive to work), they already HAVE radios most places. So it’s probably not worth finding the hardware space nor developing the software interface.

Not everyone drives though and if apple were to add it I bet it will be a HD radio. (there IS a difference too. look it up)

Running Pandora and NPR News for a few hours a week only runs up about 400MB of data usage on my iPhone. I don't think streaming radio is what is going to put anyone over the data cap.

May be not with you, but for others it may.

What kind of "gunk" do you have on your ipod anyway?

I think a lot of people missed this post. I too have a white iPhone. The inside of the jack is white.

APPLE ALREADY DOES THIS!

The entire point of this attention to detail is to support the "Brand Image" behind the name. While consumers may not "care" about little details such as this, had Apple throughly thought of every single aspect humanly possible and paid so much attention to it, then the consumer "perception" of Apple may be drastically different.

It's the "perfect, nearly magical" consumer perception of Apple that is maintained through attention to detail this exact. At the end of the day, it's all about promoting the "brand".

What kind of "gunk" do you have on your ipod anyway?

On? not much. But the headphone jack on my 2nd gen nano has some brownish tan goodness in it. I'm guessing its a blend of dirt, dust, and byproducts of all the fun you get to have when you don't live in a bubble.
