I just thought about it. Imagine an edge to edge ala X display with touchID instead of FaceID? So that means we would’ve not had a top notch. We would have a circular spot in the middle... or possibly a notch at the bottom for touchID. I think it would work.

I don’t mind touchID

I imagine that Apple stated Face ID is their future and it works so well, that Touch ID is not part of their future anymore. The Notch isn’t an issue, except for those who make it an issue. This thread topic is completely exhausted and over redundant.

I didn't mind Touch ID. However, I embrace the future and current direction of technology that Apple is using.

Time for many people on this forum to stop looking back. Touch ID is dead. If you want to use Touch ID, get a older iPhone or buy Android.

This topic has been posted about ad nauseam.

A bit late for you to imagine if I’m honest. Loads of people had similar imagination and apple pretty much confirmed that they’re not working on touch based biometric authentication systems.

I had a max for a weekend and in that time I grew to love Face ID. Touch ID may be faster but I miss Face ID and swiping up to open the phone.

Are you using a device with FaceID?

This time last year, I was as skeptical as many about it. But now I’ve been using it for a week, I wouldn’t go back to touchID if you paid me. It just works so flawlessly - and quickly enough that you can go for hours on end, repeatedly using your phone, without remembering it’s even there, working away.

I have to agree. I did not expect it to work as well as it does. It's not perfect, I'm having issues getting it to work with sunglasses on but overall I like it better than a fingerprint reader. It doesn't require conscious action to use.

TouchID would lose a lot of its appeal to me if I couldn’t find the sensor blind.
With TouchID I could do it in my pocket, as the home button was easy to find, but if it was one part of the smooth glass screen being ‘active’ I don’t know.

It would be great. But I ain't holding my breath that it will happen.

If it does and they get rid of that BUN (big ugly notch), then I'll definitely buy one. But for now, will be sticking with my 8+ for the next couple of years at least.

this maybe a little like how you try all ways and means to protect your phone from a scratch, and then the first scratch happened, and you simply f it after that

Once Apple implements iris scanning as part of FaceID, touchid will be dead in the water (If they haven't done so already on the Xs/Xs Max.

I was a TouchID fanboy last year when I decided to go with the 8+. However, after using (and still loving) my iPhone X for a couple of weeks (or more), I will never go back to TouchID. FaceID is just a hell of a lot more natural and convenient to use than TouchID ever was.

Who needs to imagine? Phones like this exist lol. Are we gonna imagine a poppup camera too? a notch is a notch, even if it's a small one. The first phone to market with a notch was the Essential PH-1, which has one of the smallest notches still today. today.Bas just for the camera.

I personally thing smasung is doing it the right way by making the top and bottom bezel as small as possible and utilizing all the space on the bezel.

I still have hope TID might return, if 3D touch is going from the 2019 models, well, that was the main obstacle to implementing under-screen touch ID for them. As for what Craig said, well don't Apple say the darnedest things sometimes, regardless of the truth content :)

I think it’s interesting to read people posting how they want new and Apple isn’t doing it and yet at the same time wanting Apple to go back to Touch ID and other older features. If you want change, embrace the changes that do happen and make them work for you. Apple is not going back to Touch ID and putting back the earphone hole.

I was not a fan of Face ID with the X at all, but this new neural engine has greatly improved its performance in my time so far with the XS Max. Face ID is the future of biometric security.

Face ID is NOT the only thing up there in the notch. Even if you get an in-screen fingerprint reader, you still have an earpiece, a front facing camera, a proximity detector, ambient light detector and a microphone that all still need to live somewhere.
Very well said. I’m not a notch fan.
