I've searched on the forums and i couldn't find this specific issue.

So this is the only issue I've ever had with iMessage, and honestly its not even all the time and its pretty rare. Sometimes it just decides its going to do it one day, and it does it ALL day.

My fiance has an iPhone 4 on Verizon, i have a 4s with AT&T. Occasionally my phone gives out that 5 minute delay then sends all my messages as SMS. However its only with the Verizon phone. I've tried it with an AT&T iPhone user and the iMessage goes through immediately.

The weird thing is that she's telling me she has 4 bars of 3G service on her phone. Now i will say that she is currently a long term sub in a school and i know schools typically get terrible reception inside, however its been awhile since this problem has surfaced and we usually have no problems using iMessage while she's at work.

I would say it would be fine because I've heard people say that once the other person sends a message back they just talk in SMS instead of iMessage, however when she sends me a message back its an iMessage so my phone immediately switches to iMessage then i get that 5 minute delay again.

Is there a way to get around this without turning iMessage off? or should i just suck it up when it happens?

If you want to manually send one message as a SMS, tap on it's speech bubble and select "Send on Text". It'll then send it as a text messages right away. Has she tried turning iMessages off and on again?

no, i just ended up turning off iMessage for the rest of today. I eventually got to her after work and the same exact thing was happening with her to me, she just didn't tell me.

I think it may have just been a verizon network problem today, because like i said i had no problems with iMessage to any of my at&t contacts with iphones

Must be a network thing, I could not replicate it I tried Verizon to Verizon, ATT to Verizon, Verizon to ATT. I normally find iMessage to be faster then normal
    SMS messages.

I have a Verizon iPad 2 and a Verizon iPhone 4S just upgraded from a Verizon iPhone 4.

I have people iMessage my me.com email and my iPad always receives them approximately a minute before the Verizon phone, I thought it was the slower processor on the 4 but now with the 4S same thing. The messages also show as sending for a very long time on both the iPhone and iPad.

Yah, seems like it was just a network issue most likely with verizon. The problem is gone today like i thought it would be. So weird....

since verizon can't do data/voice at the same time if you send her an iMessage while she is on a call your phone will make the sent sound but not say delivered and a few minutes later will get sent as a text automatically
