Go to settings, messages, scroll down until you see audio messages. Then, turn off raise to listen. There you go!
For iPad? Option does not exist. I must be missing something. Screen shot attached.

Yeah I don’t see it there either in iPadOS 14.7.1 on 2018 iPad Pro 11”

the only thing close is disabling Dictation in Settings, General, Keyboard but that also disables vocal Siri commands.
 
Thanks for the sanity check. Disabling dictation won’t turn it off neither.
Hmm. No way to disable iMessage recording you…
 
I accidentally enabled dictation because the shortcut key prompted me and after disabling it I can’t get rid of the damned audio messages button on iPadOS 18.2, is there some new solution? It’s so annoying and very stupid there’s no toggle for this option.

I’ve toggled dictation on and off, tried to drag it out, rebooted, etc.
