iMessage contact is listed as “maybe John Doe” help

In iMessage, some of my important contacts are listed as “Maybe John Doe” instead of just John Doe. The contact is in the contacts app just fine. Any idea why this is happening and how I can clear it up?

Chiming in I had the same problem.

One iMessage group member's name said "Maybe: [name]". As Ritsuka suggested (in another thread), in my Contacts, this member's contact phone# had no area code, whereas his iMessage phone# did. I added the AC to his contact phone and the "Maybe:" went away.
