Are we talking older devices running iOS 11 or older devices no longer supported by the latest OS versions?
Older devices that cannot run recent versions of iOS.

Supported or not, it wouldn't take much work at all to do what I described. I'm not asking older iPhones to have animojis or full-screen animations here.

Actually that sounds completely unfeasible. When you send an iMessage, your phone has no idea what the receiving hardware is going to be for a variety of technical and privacy reasons. And if it's being sent as an SMS Apple has no control over what happens to it. Emoji just aren't important enough to build a whole infrastructure around filtering them on a user by user basis.

At least on Apple devices we have a much extended lifetime of OS updates than on other hardware platforms. Note how few android phones can even update to new OS releases after a year or two.

For SMS, I'm pretty sure it's impossible. But I think it should be possible via iMessages. It's Apple's operating system, Apple's hardware, Apple's messaging network. Surely the iOS version is available to their own messaging app.

I'm not even asking for the ability to type those unsupported emojis either, just seeing images instead of "unknown characters" in received iMessages would be enough.

iOS 11 has the worst QA of any mobile, operating systems Apple has ever released. There are so many problems out there still, including ones far more serious than poop emojis.

I do realize that this is an internet forum filled with nerds, so this might possibly be a foolish question, but...

Have you ever met a new friend before?
Bugs like this make me happy. People need to learn that sending messages to strangers is dangerous. All I've needed for years is the loopback.

I met a girl one time. It was weird. She asked for my email address and I gave her the one I usually use: Analog_Kid@127.0.0.1

Never heard from her again. Not surprised. People always disappoint me... At least I know when I send a message, I'll always respond.

I think most would agree that iOS 11 is the most bug-laden release ever. Apple is having to pump out updates on a near weekly basis.
As mentioned, that might not be the case. And this thread doesn't really have much to do with anything about that given that the issue discussed in this thread has been around from well before iOS 11.

In Italy we're facing huge iMessage problems these days, it stops functioning and it doesn't activate again while it constantly charges for the text message. This is really bad for Apple

This is barely an issue.

I know, but it's one I've discovered in person, and it adds to the ever-longer list of annoying bugs that continue to plague Apple's most recent software platforms. Don't get me started on High Sierra...

Well, if your idea of an opening conversation starter is a single emoji, especially that emoji, maybe you need to work on your social talking skills :\

I guess that's one way of waking up and saying life is poop.

LMAO ... I think someone that does that needs to work on a LOT of things in their life.
