iMessage iPhone & iPad

I have an iPhone 3GS on iOS 6.1.3 and just picked up an iPad mini retina. The problem is hardly any of my imessage's from my iPhone have transferred over to my iPad. I thought the whole point of iCloud was wireless syncing accross all your idevices? Both are using the same iTunes/iCloud account.

Your messages from here on will appear on both devices. For you to get your old messages on there you would have to restore from an iCloud backup- which I have never attempted across devices (iPhone to iPad), and I'm honestly not sure what I would expect.
