imessage leaving group chat ?

currently the only way to leave a groupchat in imessage is to turn of iMessage

No, you won't. I am currently running iOS 6 on my iPad, and I'm active in an iMessage group as well. One useful functionality though, is "Do Not Disturb", which is letting you relax for a moment, and prevents the iPad from lighting up the screen every two seconds or making any noise. 😉
