You can sync iMessage/texts with a Mac, iPad or iPod touch signed in with the same Apple ID. Maybe you can also do the same with an extra iPhone that not in use? I remember seeing someone say they switch between 2 different iPhones regularly and the messages wouldn't always sync properly.

I have an iPad and a Mac and use the same Apple ID, have iMessage's iCloud sync/backup feature and text message forwarding enabled so my devices always have my messages up to date.

Would you be telling the kids you're monitoring them? I don't think there's a way to do this inconspicuously unless they don't regularly go through their settings.

EDIT: Sorry. I misread your post. I thought it said "as they are teens" not "until they are teens."

Then that option would probably be the best option. I don't know if you could add multiple accounts to one spare phone, though?

Also, this wouldn't monitor other texting apps from the app store, fb messages, etc.

No they don’t have any type of social media or texting apps besides iMessage

That makes it easier, then. Monitoring the messages via a spare device should be simple and cover the bases. You could also restrict their devices from downloading any unapproved apps and/or turning off the syncing features.

The new screentime settings can also show you their device usage habits and allow you to restrict them as well (set time limits for apps, schedule their downtime, etc.).
