I keep all my texts from the people I regularly text and I was going back on a convo and wanted to see something they texted me a month ago, but i was scrolling up like I normally do, and it stopped at a certain point and wouldn't load anymore.

Now I know I didn't delete the texts before that point, and I tried with other people and it's letting me go back up to a year. I tried force closing the Messages app and restarting my phone and nothing.

What's weird is the person in particular's messages wont load after a certain point but all the photos/gifs we've sent each other still appear in the "details" button.

Any advice or people having a similar issue?

What do you have in Settings->Messages->Keep Messages?

It's set to keep forever. It's only on one persons message thread. What's funny is on. my iPhone it won't let me go past September 8th but on my watch it lets me go past that in the messages. Now doesn't the watch just use data from your phone. Why would it let me go back further on my watch than my phone?

I had this happen a few days ago. I went in and out of a few other message threads, then force quit messages and reopened it, and again went into a few other threads first. I was then able to go into the problem thread and load older messages.

If that doesn't help, try a hard reset.

The person in question finally texted me back this afternoon and then I was able to go back further and then I sent a text and now it won't go back again.

This is so weird.

I talked to Apple support and after an hour, it turns out "reset all settings" did the trick. I don't know why and even she said it was a rare thing for only one convo to not load all the message history.

Hmmm...EVERY time I've upgraded to a new iPhone (and, I've gotten each one as they come out, since the 4), I have lost my old messages. And, was told several times, "that's normal". Soooo...you are saying you SHOULD be able to keep all your old messages?!?!?!

Thanks!

If you back up the old phone (either to iTunes or iCloud) and then restore that to the new phone when you upgrade then yes, absolutely you should keep all your old messages. I have every text I've sent or received since 2008 on my 6S (no exaggeration).
