iMessage on iPhone - avatars

When using iMessage on my iPad, each message shows the contact's avatar/picture from my address book. Not the case on the iPhone, just the text. I also tried switching to landscape mode but nothing. Any ideas why?

Only the iPad has avatars... unfortunately Apple didn't make it a feature for the iPhone.

Most likely because of the available screen real estate.
