iMessage on new phone.

I don’t have a backup in iCloud of my phone, long story.

What I am wondering is if I set my phone up as new and place it close to my iPad with iOS 11 and set it up that way will it transfer all the messages over from iPad to iPhone.

Unfortunately, it will not transfer all your messages. Placing it close to another device for setup just set up (I believe) your iCloud account.

Can’t you just delete all the messages from your iPad to have them perfectly synced?

The bad news is that the only way to fix this today would be to restore your iPhone from a backup of your iPad.

The good news is that in a future update to iOS 11, Messages in iCloud will be added, and if you update your iPad and iPhone, the messages from both will upload to iCloud and unify into a single message stream.
