iMessage playing videos

I swear you used to be able to also watch a video directly in the iMessage in full screen like you can with photos. With iOS 8 I can only play it in full screen when I save it to the Photos app and play it from there.
Is this a bug or do I have really bad memory?

Rather than tapping the "play arrow" in the middle of the video, tap next to the "play arrow". This will open the video full screen, then you can play it.

Thanks. I actually just figured it out on my iPad where everything is much bigger and I missed the play button. I don't send or receive many videos so I couldn't remember. I'm there tapping like a crazy person and all that happens is that the video plays than stops

I guess they made that so you can preview videos but yeah not that elegant of a UI solution like you said, especially on the iPhone where there is not that much space around the playbutton.
