In order to send and receive free text, video, pic using iMessage, do both parties have to be running ios5?

i was hoping someone could answer this for me regarding iMessage users.

my iPhone 4 and my sister's ipod touch (4th gen) are both linked to my apple ID. if we wanted to use iMessage to communicate with one another, could we do so given both iOS devices are linked to the same apple ID?

on your iphone 4, use your # to communicate, while on the ipod use the email address. that way itll make it easy.

You can login to iMessages using a different Apple ID so she'll have to create one. Purchases can still be made using the common ID.

I had a very similar question.
My wife's iPhone4 and my iPhone3GS bith use the app store and iTunes under one account name, mine. We do this so we don't have to buy the same apps or songs twice. How will iMessage work between us since we have the phones under the same account name?

Thanks.
