But you only have one eSIM activated and connected on the watch, right? (The physical/primary one from the iPhone)

Correct only on my primary sim which is Verizon. There must be a bug between watches an iOS and dual sim on iPhone and not dual sim on watch. That seems to be why if you have dual sim active on the iPhone and leave rely sold on the apple watch when away from the phone you need to reboot it to get imessage. it needs to reregister with the network. Seems like a bug that affects such a small number of customers doubt apple will even fix it.

Unfortunately it’ll take a few days till I’m back in the country - but I won’t forget it. Very interested to see how it works.
But I expect you’re right, if it’s a small number of customers.
Btw: did you try to put the watch to flight mode instead of restarting?

This has been happening to me as well. Driving me nuts the last few days trying to figure it out. Everything sending as text message from watch but iMessage from phone. If I disable one of the lines or remove the SIM card from the tray everything works fine. Was hoping to use one device for personal and business lines.... think I’ll just stick with esim for personal and forward calls from work phone until this annoying bug is worked out.

I have exactly the same problem (Series 5, with iPhone 11 Pro Max with two SIMs), have contacted Apple Support who ran some diagnostics with some profiles installed on watch and phone, but I haven't heard back yet.

Just as for others in this thread, if I restart the watch while disconnected from the iPhone, iMessage works as expected. As soon as the watch reconnects to the iPhone and then loses connection again, messages go out as SMS again...

We all need to report this bug since we are probably in the minority

I had the same problem, as well as others, which has meant I’m unable to use my watch (reliably) on cellular and so have cancelled the contract. Will only go for GPS watches in the future.

That is terrible.

Is a restart always required for you guys or does switching to flight mode work as well?
Haven’t had a chance yet to test out myself, still Travelling.

This bug is infuriating. I submitted to Apple. Maybe they’ll fix it. 🤞🏻 I did notice some random contacts of mine will work with iMessage while connected to the phone. But I couldn’t find a rhyme or reason as to why they were special. I compared the records with others that were afflicted and nothing stood out.

Exactly. Same behaviour here.

Same thing here with certain contacts.

Ok....think I figured it out.... I had AT&T set for data on “SECONDARY” from physical sim card. Had TELUS set to “PRIMARY” on esim. I set both voice and cellular to ”SECONDARY” and turned off ”PRIMARY. After a minute I set voice and cellular to ”PRIMARY” and turned off “SECONDARY”. Then turned on ”SECONDARY” to cell data and left “PRIMARY” on voice.... everything turned blue on watch after that. No more green bubbles! In the process I think it signed the “PRIMARY” number out of imesssge and back in again as a pop up said the number had been added to iMessage. Odd because I had previously manually signed out of iMessage in the “send receive“ iMessage settings section and signed back in but it didn’t work. Anyway.... it’s working now! Hope this helps.....

Are you and @smf72 still having success with this issue? I recently got the iPhone 11 Pro and setup dual sim use for the phone and Apple Watch 5 cell version with both iPhone and Apple Watch on latest current version of watchOS and iOS. This resulted in the watch not being able to use iMessage but rather green sms only. When I turn off one of the lines, the watch instantly switches to blue iMessage. In your last post in Feb you said watchOS beta fixed the problem. That beta you were using back then is of course the current watchOS version and I still am having the exact same problem you wrote about in your original post. So I’m writing you both to see if your watch still is working with iMessage correctly on the current official version of watchOS and iOS. Any update? Thanks in advance

I found a way to get it working also, I toggled both my primary and secondary lines off. Then toggled them back on and it seems to refresh imessage on both lines. I have blue bubbles on my apple watch now for all converstions!

Has this stayed working for you? I have only had it work for about 5-10 min, and then revert back. What an annoying issue!

Yes, it is still working fine for me, no issues so far! Not sure if I was clear, go into settings -> cellular and under cellular plans toggle "Turn On This Line" setting OFF for both at the same time. Then turn them both back on.
