iPhone 13 Pro Max iMessage stuck "downloading messages from icloud"

So got my new ip13pro max. restored from a backup via the cloud. When I scroll through my text messages the photos in my messages are missing. the majority of them. also at the bottom of imessage i have "downloading messages from iCloud". been this way for about 48 hours and the bar never progresses. Does anyone else have this issue? I have tried a few different things. restarted the phone, reset network connections, toggled messages on and off in iCloud. same result. Not sure if the phone is just still indexing or it's stuck. I have a lot of data so not sure how long it takes.

If you haven't already, (while connected to Wi-Fi) try plugging in the charger and turning the screen off. The download should resume.

Yah it’s still not downloading. I look in my phone storage and missing about 60gigs in my messages which is probably all the pictures. Guess I will just keep waiting. 3 days in now

Did this ever resolve itself? Been several days for me.

I didn’t. I waited 2 weeks. I purchased backup software and downloaded all the messages and restored them. Even that didn’t get them all back. I just had to let the messages go
