iMessage waiting on activation?

i was having this problem too and solved it by simply turning off wifi on the phone. after about 10 seconds it activated just fine and i was able to select my number again on my phone.
 
Problem solved.

I logged into iMessages from my MacBook.

Messages > preferences > accounts > check the box with your cell number..

it immediately recognized my number for FaceTime and iMessages.
