I was a new iPhone user with the iPhone4, so unfortunately I wasn't able to be grandfathered into an unlimited data package from AT&T, I do have the 2GB plan however, and only use half on a really busy month.

I really like iMessage when I'm at home, the messaging over Wi-Fi is a lot faster and more reliable then typical SMS, but when I leave the house, iMessage is still active, and uses the 3G network to send messages. I have unlimited text messaging, so when I'm not connected to wi-fi, I'd much rather just use SMS messages.

Is there currently a way to have iMessage work only on Wi-Fi? I haven't seen anything, so I highly doubt it, I was just curious if they had mentioned anything about the possibility.

Interesting question, but is it really important? I mean, these are messages of text - the amount of data sent can't be more than a few bytes per message, right? Even for the most avid of textures, I'd be really surprised if it amounted to more than 10 MB, maybe even 5 MB, of total usage per month. Heck, even hitting 1 MB would probably be a challenge.

Thats all well until someone decided to iMessage the OP a video clip. And we all know that some people that have unlimited internet will and have done this in the past with other services not understanding that some people don't have unlimited access.

To the OP how often are you need a free and legal wifi. If more then 50% then you will be ok. And to keep an eye on it, if it is getting high switch it off for the reminding of the month.

Does iMessage allow that, or will it revert to MMS? And if it does allow people to send photos/videos, does it prompt the user if they want to download it before making the download? I don't know; just wondering aloud.

No it doesn't (with the iPod Touch anyway) it will just download it straight away without even asking permission. There may be an option on the iPhone iMessage to disable cellular data when a Media file is sent.

But am sure that all iMessage goes via Data rather then Cellular MMS.
