iMessage working for iPhones not iPad

Two iPhones. One iPad 2. Sharing one apple id.

IMessage between our two iPhones worked automatically using our phone numbers. And we are finding iMessage working with other people's iPhones.

But iPad can't send, and not receiving. I set up a special, unique gmail address as the receiving address. If from my iPad I send an iMessage to the iPad's receive address the text of that message appears as a received message on the iPad. But if I try to send a message from phone to iPad it seems to go through without an error message but doesn't show up on iPad. Always get an error message when sending to phone from iPad.

What do you get when you add the gmail address in the iPad's
    Settings>messages>Receive At
When I add a non apple ID address there it tries to verify the address then it shows an error.

Have you set up the gmail address as its own apple account?
I would guess you need two accounts in order to communicate between two devices.

Almost every single iMessage issue people have on these forums seems to exist when two people share an AppleID.

    Just sayin'.

I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and iMessage works on both. When someone iMessages my email address I receive it on both devices. Click on Settings/Messages/Receive At/ and make sure both devices have the same email address entered.

    Thanks for your replies.

When I posted this, I had a the gmail on my ipad as the receiving email but no other. It's listed as verified when I go to the myappleid, although its not associated with a separate apple id. If I sent an iMessage from my iPad to that email it arrived back on my iPad, but if I try to send to that gmail email from my iPhone--even though I see a blue message bubble--it seems to go through but never appears on the iPad. If I try to send to my email address from my iPad, which is the one that is my apple id, I get a failure message. No problem
though between the two iPhones sharing the id.

Then I removed the gmail and entered my apple id email as the receive email on the iPad and still the same problems.

    I'm sure it's something quirky.

If I set up a new apple iD for the iPad that means they can't share iCloud, app purchases, etc? Or is there a way to use one id for iMessage and another for everything else?

I have AppleCare on my phone but not my iPad. I wonder if they would help if I framed it as an iPhone send problem or is this something I could ask about at a genius bar?

I think you can leave your original apple ID for iCloud, app store etc.

Once that gmail is associated with a new apple ID, you only have to enter the email into the messenger settings and nowhere else.

Just a stab in the dark as I didn't test it myself.
I run my iPad and iPhone on the same apple ID so they sync up.

    Good Luck

You're right that they can't share iCloud. However, you can authorise 5 iOS devices to run purchased apps, so your wife can login to your iTunes account to download the apps on your account.

You can use a different ID for iCloud and iMessage. That is how I am setup. Same ID on my iPad and iPhone for iCloud and iTunes Match. And a different Apple ID for using iMessage. Both services are working properly.
