I installed iOS 6 on my iPod touch. Went through the settings and found out that you have to sign in before you can actually use? Is that for iPod touch and iPad only and not on iPhone?
 
Of course you're required to sign in, iMessage uses your Apple ID no matter what device you're using so that it knows who is actually using it.
