Between my iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, my iMessages are not synching properly. For example, the Apple Watch shows no unread messages, the iPad shows seven unread messages, and the Apple Watch shows eight. Why is there such inconsistency?

And its been a headache ever since... there was a period where I thought Handoff was not working correctly and did all the troubleshooting only to realize that this functionality had been pulled in iOS 11... aargh...

This could explain why my Apple Watch shows old messages despite me viewing them and dismissing them on my phone.
Correct. Messages should still come to all of your devices, but if you read or delete one on one device, that will not have an effect on the other divides that the message came to. I’m guessing that iMessage syncing via iCloud will be the major 11.3 feature, just as Apple Pay Cash is the 11.2 feature.
