I asked for clarification as to why a conversation correctly started with my primary number would randomly change to sending from an other address or number. I was told "if the number becomes unavailable it will randomly choose another address or number to send from". Seems like avoiding the issue of admitting a bug. Anyway, they closed my case with the recommendation to remove all but my primary number, which doesn't really work for me. Not much else I can do at this point though.

Did they mean they only support a max of one phone number OR one email? My settings had my phone and five email addresses (every one I have on the phone plus an iCloud and a me.com one!).

If it's supposed to be 'phone' only, will that still work to an iPad, for example? Haven't reviewed how iMessage works on non-cell devices, my bad.

The way I understood the explanation was that if you have multiple addresses or numbers enabled it could randomly send from one of them if the primary number was "unavailable", but couldn't get further clarification than that.

Thanks for this thread - I recently found it by accident browsing through the forum. I am having this problem - my mom, my wife and a few other iphone friends are receiving texts from me from my icloud account instead of my phone number when I use my watch. It's odd and it's random so I will do some more research now that it may possibly not be user error, which I just assumed it was for me.

This happened to myself and friends forever over the years. Fix is to only have your number selected. Uncheck the the other addressesj

Happened to me as well ( once I got my AW )

From Phone imessage to another contact though.
showing my email address

I did uncheck all email accts like the prev poster mentioned
Hopefully, that works

Since removing all other numbers/addresses from iMessage wasn't an ideal solution for me, I have been trying other things over the last few days, and haven't had a repeat of the event.

What I have done:

  • Disabled iMessage on all devices that had it enabled (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
  • Deleted conversations on all devices from people that received messages from my other accounts
  • Had problematic contacts remove all conversations from me
  • Ensured those same people did not have my alternate addresses in their contact for me (1 did). Just to make sure they weren't sending to an alternate address or phone number and I was just responding to it.
  • Unpaired Apple Watch from phone (to allow re-syncing of Messages settings)
  • Re-enabled iMessage on all devices and verified ALL devices had my primary number under "Start new conversations from"
  • Re-paired Apple Watch to iPhone (Messages settings mirroring iPhone)

It has been a few days now, and I have sent multiple messages from my iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, iPad and haven't had a single reoccurrence of the issue. I asked a few of my contacts to inform me if any of my messages came from anything other than my primary number, and haven't heard anything yet.

I know the above may be a bit overkill and may not have actually solved the issue long term. I also realize this is clearly an iPhone issue and not directly related to the Apple Watch. However, I uses messages across all of my devices quite frequently and did not run into this issue even once until I had a watch paired to my phone. I just wanted to share what has worked for me so far.
