Searching the boards for this query, I was never able to find a thread that really dealt with this question:
Currently I am recording a Squier 51 straight into the line-in of a Macbook (via one of those 1/4">1/8" adapters). The results I get are fine for clean work (especially in Ableton), but I just get too much noise when using the amp simulator in Garageband to find many usable distorted sounds.
I keep hearing about devices like the iMic, but am never sure whether it will be of use to me. Would it improve my guitar recording experience? All the reviews on the Apple site seem to be from people transferring their vinyl collection to MP3 (fools!).
Here is the iMic, and here is a similar (?) Behringer device.
