Which other items do you mean? The only other purchase in question is the Mini and whether to buy now or wait or is there an alternative product such as the PS3 the previous poster mentioned?

The only other things mentioned were the airport extreme or timecapsule, express and some external storage?

hey mate,

i would go the time capsule. its pretty much the extreme with a built in HD and storage centre.

external storage is definately recommended, even if you have the time capusle, basically because you need 1 for backups, and 1 for spare stuff that can be lost if it does happen.

I'm hoping there wont need to be any file juggling as the mini would be strictly for media duties, it would be wirelessly connected to the router, it would have an external wirewire drive (500GB) for all dvd rips and itunes library. It'll be on 24/7 and not only would it be used for a living room media centre but it will also act as a remote library for the imac and the airtunes speakers in the bedrooms and kitchen.

The iMac will be wirelessly connected to the router and will have an external drive connected by firewire (500GB) for storing photoshop temp files, video temp files, downloads and just general bits & pieces.

I then figured a timecapsule drive or a external drive connected to the airport extreme would act as a whole system backup but possibly I'd be better off just having another firewire drive connected to the iMac for timemachine backup as there won't much reason backing up the mini as it''l have nothing on it? (obvioulsy I'll back up my media drive periodically, but I'll do it manually)

you sure you wanna connect wirelessly?? even 802.11n gets very slow every now and then haha.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll have a choice other than running meters of cat5 around the flat and up and down stairs! As it's a rented place I can't do what I'd like and run cables through walls and under floors. Hopefully wireless-n will be quick enough, after all it'll only be used mainly for the internet, streaming of music & the odd film. And as my internet is only 4mbs even slow wireless-g would be far quicker than my best internet speed.

aahh ok thats fair enuf then. i recently had installed cat5e, its the best thing on the planet hahaha. very well worth it.

hopefully N will be fine for what you need man.

We use a Mini as a syncing computer (Eye TV Hybrid DVR) to our Apple TV and it plays just fine. There are issues with ff/rew, though, so it's not optimal. However, for audio (which is what OP seems to want wireless for) it should be just fine.

ah ok just for audio, that would be perfect then! i highly doubt that audio is going to break the 300mbps bit rate mark lol.
