Imojis don't appear?

MacBook Air running Sonoma 14.4. I understood that if in System Settings/Keyboard I set the fn key to "shoe emojis and symbols" pressing the fn key would do just that. Mine doesn't, I have toppers fn + E

Any ideas please?
