iMovie 08 changing .dv to .mov

This may boil down to my unfamiliarity with iMovie editing.

When I edit a DV clip in the Events window (specifically, when I reject a section of the clip and move rejected clips to the trash), I notice that iMovie appears to change the file from DV to MOV (Quicktime) format. Is this correct? Is this necessary?
