I recently bought a Macbook about 2 weeks before iLife 08 came out. (I didn't know this until after the purchase). In your opinions, should I go ahead and buy iLife 08 or do you think '06 is good enough? How much better is iMovie 08 than 06?

In sort for prosumer users iMovie 08 is a step back, you have less custom options. For people brand new to video editing, it is a joy to work with and easy. Thankfully you can download (with the purchase of iLife 08) the 06 version and have it on your system too.
