iMovie 09 causing macroblocking?

I didn’t see this question on mroogle.

I’m importing mp4s into iMovie 09 to create a project. The source mp4s have good enough video quality on a 13” and 24” display, but once they’re imported into iMovie, there is considerable macroblocking noticeable in iMovie’s preview window and also once the project is shared with iDVD on the same displays.

Anybody else seeing this? Is there a solution or free alternative?
