iMovie '09 ignores audio volume changes - leaves at 100%

In iMovie I need to mute a piece of music so I can sync it up properly but whenever I try to change the volume of any audio file it doesn't do anything to it.

I've tried updating but that doesn't work.

Any suggestions?
