Imovie '11 error - wrong clip copies and pastes instead

so when you copy and paste a clip and put it into a project and you want to take this clip and make a new project to export the small clip and say convert it to change the speeds, when you try and copy and paste the clip project to project the same clip does not copy and paste but another portion of the same video does.

Hope this make sense eheheh
