iMovie: Camera connected through external drive?

Can iMovie see and import footage from a camera connected by FW through an external drive? Or must it be connected directly to a Mac?
 
Daisy-chained devices should be visible to the computer. Only if there is something wrong with the FW port on your HDD will you have an issue.
