iMovie Extract Audio Speed Issues

Hi,

I am trying to figure out why it is taking my MBP so long to extract audio from a clip that is only 10 seconds long. It says 8 minutes remaining!!!

My friend tried this same thing on his computer with 3 gb of ram and it extracted in less than 3 seconds. But he was using a different type of video. Why does it take so long to simply extract the audio from a clip? I just need to splice in photos over the audio... but it is going to take years at this rate...
