Apple today announced it has updated iMovie app for the iPhone and iPad with two new types of video projects called "Magic Movie" and "Storyboards."

Apple says the "Magic Movie" function instantly creates a custom video from the clips and photos a user selects, with transitions, effects, and music automatically added. "Storyboards" helps users learn to edit and improve their video storytelling skills with pre-made templates for popular types of videos shared on social media platforms, such as DIY videos, cooking tutorials, product reviews, science experiments, and more.

iMovie for macOS was also updated today with support for importing "Magic Movie" and "Storyboard" projects created with the iOS app. The free updates are currently rolling out on the App Store across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Apple also updated Final Cut Pro, Compressor, and Motion on macOS with optimized performance on the Mac Studio and more. The new version of Final Cut Pro also supports importing "Magic Movie" and "Storyboard" projects created with iMovie.

iMovie for iOS version 3.0 release notes:
• Get started, learn, and be inspired by two brand-new types of video projects: Magic Movie and Storyboards
• Create a Magic Movie to instantly make and share custom videos with titles, transitions, and music in just a few taps
• Select an album of photos and videos, and Magic Movie will create a polished video using your media
• Start with a Storyboard project to improve your storytelling skills using a template that guides you through the video-making process
• Choose from 20 Storyboards for common video projects like Cooking, DIY, Q&A, Product Review, and Book Report
• Customize and organize your storyboard video by adding, reordering, and grouping shots within the flexible shot list
• Learn different types of video framing and storytelling techniques with the shot tips provided in each type of storyboard
• Record video or take photos right into each Storyboard placeholder clip, or add media from your Photos library
• Enhance your Magic Movie or Storyboard video with 20 dynamic styles that include title layouts, fonts, filters, color palettes, and music
• Go further by editing clips with tools like trim, split, and clip speed
• Apply title treatments, record voiceover narration, or adjust the depth-of-field effect in Cinematic mode video clips* to further customize your videos
• Import Magic Movie and Storyboard projects into a timeline in iMovie for Mac or Final Cut Pro** to take your project further
• Save Magic Movie and Storyboard videos to your Photos library, send to friends and family via Messages or Mail, or share with your followers on social media
* Requires iPhone 13, iPad mini (6th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch or iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later)
** Requires iMovie for Mac version 10.3.2 or Final Cut Pro version 10.6.2
iMovie 3.0 requires a device running iOS 15.2 or later or iPadOS 15.2 or later.

iMovie on iOS desperately needs a complete redesign - it’s so incredibly incapable compared for the macOS version it’s insane.

I agree, an overhaul is totally overdue. With that said, I like the app, I use it all the time for simple video editing. I hate that it is so limited in functionality (like the green screen options, PiP placing of other video streams, objects or even text).

I wish they would migrate the MacOS version to the iPad, it is perfectly capable of handling it.

Edit: And while at it, they could add some of the effects from the Clips app, that would appeal to the younger users.

It still does not support portrait video, though right?
Wish it would. It's always a pain to rotate the video and then it on my iPhone again in order to have a properly oriented, full-screen vertical video for TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.

How in 2022 is the main video editing app made by Apple not even able to adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation etc?

You are correct. You are left with two options: 1) Accept unnecessary huge black lines, 2) Rotate the video and work with it unintuitively on the wrong side, then export and use the Photos app to rotate back to vertical.

You have to use the Photos app for that too, then import to iMovie.

That takes ages though. Plus you can’t easily check if all the clips are correctly adjusted together. It needs to be all in the same app.

The main video editing app made by Apple is Final Cut Pro. They have a free video editing app called iMovie, but it’s not their main focus.
Final cut is mac only and not everyone has one.
The iPhone can record 4k Dolby Vision, slo mo and cinematic video but the main video editing app can simply increase the brightness. It’s odd.

iMovie on the M1 iPad Pro 12.9 still cannot render and export in the background.

The iPadOS doesn't support true backgrounding.

Well, that confirms it - apps need to be optimised for Ultra. I wonder if it’s the same for other M-series chips?
This is not news. Apple used a beta version of this Final Cut update at its March 8th presentation and released it to certain of the people who were reviewing the Mac Studio. Blackmagic Design is also actively working on further optimising DaVinci Resolve.

Custom aspect ratio and basic color grading are all essential features iMovie for iOS really need. Nothing more. Why can’t Apple just include such a basic feature?

Been excited for this bit sadly disappointed again... To test I selected photos and videos from a trip I had in January, only about 130 altogether, it seemed to have downloaded them before creating the project where one can make adjustments, but many clips and photos that should be there showed up just as blank and black despite the donloading content thing finished just fine. Going through the list to make my selection and a new project again is well time consuming and annoying so i didnt do but tried exporting, sharing saving the video to fix the problem saidly no luck with that.. It's really annoying, I have Apple One and had the largest icloud storage plan even before to never have to worry about losing stuff and having it all with me all the time, but icloud download speeds are super slow as always. Going back to review my reel I have to wait 4-7 seconds for each picture to load full resolution for edits or making a decision wether to delet it (nevermind videos). Imovie likes to work with local downloaded images and videos, fair enough, but browsing downloading making content local for imovie shouldnt be hell, and it has always been and still remains to be seemingly..

Used iPadPro 2018 latest iOS latest iMovie.

Ah, then the main video editing app for iPhone is actually LumaFusion, not iMovie.
It’s $39.99 and worth it if you want editing more like what you’d see on a Mac or Windows. iMovie is just a free way for folks with very limited needs to edit their videos. More power than the Photos app, but FAR less than LumaFusion.

Final Cut Pro goes for $299, probably far steeper than most want to pay (especially as a lot of folks in this thread would rather use the free iMovie and complain about it’s lack of features than spending $39.00 for LumaFusion and actually editing video). :)
