iMovie help please

Hi, just got a new camcorder that records in mp4, importing the footage into iMovie though almost doubles the file size as it converts it to a .mov, is there anyway to import footage without imovie converting the video? Thanks.

No. It needs to be converted into something that can be edited by iMovie. mp4 is a delivery format, not an editing format.
