iMovie locks up

New to everything mac.
Trying to figure out iMovie. First few trials last night I was able to delete sections of clips and then send to trash. After a few times when I selected to send them to the trash it appears to do the task, then at the end it locks up iMOvie and it becomes non-respondent.
Any ideas?
