Yeah, the trimming aspect is time consuming and leaves you with a feeling of "missing something"...

The trimming is by far the worst part of the app. If they can fix that I think it will be pretty cool. Still neat to add music to your videos though.

Does anyone know how to change/edit the name of the project? Not the title on the video. But the actual name of the project. I've made 2 so far and they are both titled "Today" and I can't figure out how to change that.

Thanks!

Why the hell do I have to have location services on to access pictures and movies that I took on the iPhone but not in the iMovie app???

If it was a photo or single video clip - i see what you mean...but most of the time, you put movies together from various locations.

If you put together a video from multiple locations, the program would get confused on where to assign actual locations. For example, I took a picture of Boeing 747 refueling in ATL and took a video of my flight banking. If i put the photo and video together in iMovie - the program wouldn't know which location to assign the movie to. I think this is why location services are turned off in iMovie and you have to assign it manually.

I understand that this editing on an iPhone, and not really supposed to be serious. But, a splice feature seems like such a no brainer. What if my middle part is towards the end or my middle part is in the beginning? I thought I would be able to record a five minute video, skim through it and rearrange the clips of one big clip.

Yeah I tried it out yesterday. I wanted to put video and photos into the movie I was making, and rearranging the pictures and video on the tiny timeline is very time-consuming. I hate that I can't trim a clip properly or splice a clip. I haven't even finished the tiny video, because it's so difficult for me to edit out the parts I don't want.

I probably should have scrubbed out things in the Photo section and then imported to iMovie, but iMovie should be able to handle this much better.

Agreed, they should add a "Split Clip" function rather than requiring you add the clip twice. Even using this trick it is hard to get it exactly right, but at least it's doable.

You recorded a five minute video? holy crap.
Could you break down the original five minute video into smaller highlight videos?...Then go back and piece together your highlighted videos in iMovie?

It's best to record in small clips around 20-30secs at the max. Five minutes of video is tough to manage - even on a regular computer...unless you have 8Gb of Ram or something.

I didn't actually record a 5 minute video. That was an example of how someone might use it in the wild. Hell, even a 2 minute video. The point is, no one really records in 20-30 second chunks when they are trying to capture something that hasn't happened yet. Like if you start recording something and you realize something is going to happen, but you don't know when it's going to happen, it's best to continue recording, so you don't miss it.

I wanted to cut 3 minutes out of the middle of a 7 minute video. I ended up trimming one end, exporting. Then I trimmed the other end, exported. Then created a new project and combined the two trims. What a pain in the ass.

iMovie is NOT for video editing. All iMovie can do is multimedia presentations by combining video clips. It's basically PowerPoint for video.

I agree with your perspective here totally.

I have to say while it is cool to pull a basic clip series so fast. But I cant seem to find out how to even put in basic text.

Hopefully they will listen and add new features sooner than later. That felt like a $5 app. Actually I take that back, a 99 cent app.

Come on Apple.

If this is a repeat of recent posts I apologize. Have not had a chance to read thru em.

how to add multiple pictures at once?

Does iMovie support adding multiple pictures at once? It seems like it only lets me add one picture at a time.

You don't, when you start iMovie it asks, because it is accessing photos and video that already have this data included in them, if you had it turned on for taking photos and video outside of iMovie.

No that is incorrect. Location services has to be on for iMovie to access anything that wasn't taken inside of iMovie whether is was geotagged or not. I never have location services on and have pictures that came straight from emails and none of it is accessible. Shame.

iMovie is quite a let down. Here I thought that iMovie was going to give ReelDirector a run for its money. So far, ReelDirector is the most intuitive and flexible video editor i have seen for the iPhone, which has been on the market since last October...even though it doesn't support fancy looking (and useless) themes. ReelDirector does some nice titles, transitions, trims, music + video audio combinations, pictures, etc. etc.

If you look past all the counter intuitive interface, the most annoying part of iMovie is the titling. Why must I have a bottom title that lasts the duration of the clip it was applied to? Any normal video editor will give you the option to fade it away after a few seconds.

The only features i like? Themes (if they ever end up being useful), real time video rendering (ReelDirector needs to render), bottom scrolling clip editor.

In reading thru the other posts. Two huge misses. No split and no fade at end.

I have read the FAQ page and it says to add a title you double click a video click to add text and other settings. All I seem to get are the trimming markers. Am I missing something here?

I hope version 2 has some major and minor enhancements.

Yes, you need to double click the clip, single clip gives you the trimming markers.

BTW, I posted in thread on Tips that you can use a black picture added at the end to give fade to black at end.

Just read this thread and agree on all the negatives. My top 3 gripes are:

1. Unable to split a video.
2. Cannot set how long a title is displayed (it stays on for the entire clip).
3. Lack of transitions. You get to choose between the cross dissolve or the theme's transition.

As for the location aware titling. Has anyone found out a way to manually put in the location? I want to put in something like backyard or Donna's house, lol.

I know this is about iMovie, but has any of ya'll tried ReelDirector? Solid app IMO. I wonder if it could handle the 4's video.

I know what it is. I have no video of my niece and nephew so I was settling for photos. I guess you can only add text to video which is another development opportunity. :D

Will use the black pic to add a fade at end.

Also thinking about trying which seems to be more polished. Any other recomendations on video editing? I came from a 3G so I have no reference on these apps.

I was very excited about this app, but it's turned out to be a big dissapoitment. The app often crashes and the export will not work. It looks like it's working for some, but after reading the reviews I see others are having the same problem.

It'll handle the video, but the largest export option is currently 640x480. If they up this to 720p output then Reeldirector wins. It has far more features and the ability to splice a clip! What a concept.

My niggles with iMovie after playing with it for a couple of hours,

It's annoying you can't put titles over a photo.

The built in theme music doesn't loop, after 1 minute it fades and the rest of your movie is silent. You don't know this till after though as it plays while you are editing.

The crop sliders are fiddly and hard to position.

I could only get it to export when the phone was connected to my computer, does it get a power boost?!!

Hopefully they'll sort these issues out, is there a feedback page for Apple apps?
