iMovie "Need Help Splitting an Event"

I have a video event that was manually imported into imovie. I read the direction regarding clicking on the thumbnail in the preview pane, and select "Split Event before selected clip" The menu item is there, but it is grayed out. Why is this? I seem to be following the directions perfectly.
