imovie newb, what to do with video after importing to iMovie

I have about 30 gigs of video on my hard drive. If I import into iMovie, does that make a duplicate copy? So basically I'm taking up twice the hard drive space? Excuse my ignorance. Thanks.

There is an option on import that says "Move Files" or "Copy Files". Moving the files doesn't create duplicates, copying the files does.
