Thru systems settings you can add keyboard language import sources. I foun that despite never adding any, all the languages are found as import sources when I click on the keyboard icon on the sign in page. I did not put them there so I wonder how they got there. Would a hacker move them or could there be another explanation? Does anybody else who has not moved them from Systems Settings have all the import sources languages when they click the keyboard icon?

Do you mean "input sources" instead of "import sources"? When I go to the keyboard preferences, I only have the original US source plus one that I added manually myself.

what version of macOS? If you running Sonoma or later, you can click the keyboard layout indicator in the top right of the screen on the login screen and make adjustments to your keyboard settings - all the options there are provided by Apple and this addresses a problem with the default keyboard layout on previous macOS versions. So no need to worry. 🙃

I am using Sonoma but my q is why do I get over a hundred languages to choose from when I click on the keyboard icon. In other words, I don't have to go to system settings to choose languages.

Well, you could go and remove the unwanted. 🤓

To "why does Apple make so many available via the keyboard-icon on the log screen?" My factless guess: an easy implementation to offer this option - at least one can quick manoeuvre within the list by pressing the first letter of language/keyboard layout. There are anecdotes where Mac/macOS "forgot" the standard keyboard layout, so it is probably wise to offer this option. 🙃

EDIT: for MacOS X <= 10.12 there is Monolingual which an be used to remove unwanted language resources.
