Yeah I know the one I linked was 64k and higher. Was in a hurry and didn't want to dig around. You can find many benchmarks for 4k randoms on the internet..that aren't 2MB/s..it's more like 15-20MB/s vs 35MB/s, depends on the controller, firmware, etc.

The 20MB/s I found were the Vertex EX. Not the regular Vertex. The price is significantly higher.

I just ordered the Corsair P256, which is very well reviewed on Bare Feats. SSDs seem to shine as boot drives where you are mostly loading the OS, loading applications, etc. I'm hoping replacing my boot drive with the Corsair will make a noticeable difference in boot-up and launch times. Beyond that, I will be using my RAID 5 array for all file-related storage.

Congrats! It's based on the Samsung controller which is solid. I'm sure you will feel like you just upgraded your whole computer... be sure to let us know your impressions.

BTW, I still don't understand the love affair with Bare Feats around here.

I think it's mainly that we don't have another purely Mac alternative.

If you do, plz tell me! :)

Although they are not purely Mac, the top-tier PC review sites provide much better in-depth analysis. For example, AnandTech's reviews of SSD's in recent months are fantastic and the results there are far more informative and just as indicative of what a Mac Pro user would experience.

On the same site we find Intel's X25-M v2 at 57MB/s 4K random write, compared with 36MB/s for the Vertex. Not as much of a gap, but still. My original question was whether that random write was a critical benchmark for a boot drive. If it's not, then 35 or 57 doesn't mean much of a difference in the real world.

(Note: what I find sad for the entire "industry" is that each website has a different random write for those drives. I found a 4K random write test of the 1.30 Vertex at 8MB/s... Really sucks that there are no recognized standards for this.)

I really like Anandtech, but then again if you quote them too often in here, you get the "It's not on a Mac so can't be used" argument. Fortunately, my life (or job!) doesn't depend on very critical and exact performance of the SSD I'm soon going to buy.

I'm still hesitating between the X25-M v2 and the regular Vertex. I think a Vertex v2 would convince me. We'll see.

I agree! There are hundreds of Mac articles and sites that are much more scientific and offer more accurate info.

I think it's just because he's an active member here, no?
