people can do what they wish but consider yourself forewarned if you have problems. I had the headache 2 years ago so I will be dropping my fan number ahead of time cuz I wanna buy from the apple store with no issues

Okay, thanks...I consider myself forewarned.

I still get nightmares after standing in line for 6 hours only to be turned away because of the FAN discount on my account. That was on 3g launch day.

I had problems when I bought the 3G at launch. I had to call AT&T while at the Apple store to have them remove the FAN account. The sales person was then able to process the sale. The weird thing is that the FAN discount was never removed.

I plan on ordering the phone online to avoid any hassle, but if the Apple store can process orders for FAN accounts, I'd rather just get the phone there.

Haha. I originally waited in line that morning too, but decided to leave because the line was moving too slowly. I went back in the evening and the line was much shorter but I still had a bit of a wait. After all that, I was told that they couldn't process my purchase as well because of the FAN account. I was able to get it though, after calling AT&T from the store.

That must have been horrible.
You have no idea :( My wife literally did shed a tear when she saw how disappointed I was. To Apple store employee's credit they really did try to help, but it was AT&T's fault and they were very slow to fix it.

So I'm taking it people with premier account that have FAN can't order from Apple web site???

I can imagine...

And they couldn't just do the upgrade and then have AT&T re-add the fan discount later?

I bet they didn't even think of that...

Hardest part about having premiere account is finding upgrade date on website.
No kidding! I have never succeeded in finding it. I can get information by dialing *639# from the phone. But I get caught in an endless loop to the premier store whenever I try to check on the web.

Ditto, only I wasn't turned away, but it took forever.

This thread however is old news and no longer relevant since the release of 3GS.

I just spoke with a premiere rep who worked 2 years ago and she said retail stores cannot process business account orders. I believe her. she seemed like one of the few att employees with half a....

This would be false as I got my 3GS on a business account at an AT&T store.

We called AT&T mulitple times while in store and none of the CS reps knew how to remove FAN discount or they didn't do it right. After spending another 45 minutes or so in store in addition to six hours in line I had to give up.

Exact same thing happened to me. Slept out at Apple store and was 5th in line, only to be rejected at the counter due to what me and the Apple clerk finally figured out was the FAN. After spending 45 minutes in vain trying deal with AT&T over the phone, I left the Apple store, drove a half-hour to the nearest corporate AT&T store, had them remove the fan, drove back to the Apple store where the line was still about 400 people long. Thankfully, the Apple employees were really great about the situation. They whisked me past the waiting throngs and let me get right back to the counter to get my phone. Made for a very crazy, stress-filled morning.

FWIW, I spoke with the manager at my local AT&T corporate store who told me that I would NOT be able to purchase iPhone 4 at an Apple store on via Apple online with the FAN discount still attached to my account. Now maybe he was just trying to make a sale and avoid having a potential customer buy elsewhere, but after going through that experience two years ago, I'm just not going to risk it. Besides, what is the downside to taking the FAN off temporarily? Maybe a gap of a month or so for it to get reflected in my bill again, but that's it.

AT&T is just trying to make a sale. I had problems upgrading to 3G with my FAN (remove/buy/re-add) but no problems upgrading to 3GS, they fixed it.

I hope you're right. I am tired of the lines so I am planning on pre-ordering for Apple store pick up.

How about for those of us still using a FAN# from our days at an old employer?:D

Premier Order

I had no problems for the 3GS order using the Premier website.
Order placed and confirmed via email on 6/8/09 at 8:13 PM.
Order was shipped via FedEx overnight on 6/18/09 and delivered on 6/19/09 at 8:55 AM.

I only hope the iPhone 4 order goes as well.

Good luck,
Token

This is untrue, I work for at&t and can verify that simply having a FAN number attached to your account doesn't make upgrades more difficult or impossible at Authorized Retailers or Apple Stores. In some small cases clients have had issues if they're business had a FAN and was a "Premier" business customer while being on a special rate plan or having a business owned line, this will not happen for the majority of customers and if you have a specific rate plan (note: not any FAN discount but a rate plan) you should order online from at&t or purchase from at&t directly, otherwise purchase away at your choosing.

I have a FAN discount on my account and I definitely had troubles buying iPhones twice times at an Apple store. I had to call and remove the FAN discount from my account before I was able to buy from the Apple store. This was for the 3G.

I purchased a 3GS upgrade a few months ago through the AT&T business premier site and that went fine.

For this upgrade, I plan to buy from AT&T so I do not have to worry about whether the FAN will be a problem or not.

If you are with AT&T premiere, make sure you pick up your iPhone at a brick and mortar ATT store or you will have problems purchasing it. Take my advice I just spoke with a rep and I had big problems with the 3G two years ago. Ask any questions here

You can either...

1. pick it up directly at an ATT store

or

2. drop our FAN account number and buy anywhere and readd the fan number later

I repeat, if you try to buy an iphone at apple store or walmart etc and you have a fan# you will be frustrated and have to wait for them to remove the fan# manually. save yourself a headache

This was fixed last year before the 3Gs launch. No issues now.

No issues with my 3Gs pre-order last year

I have a discount through my employer and didn't have any problems with my pre-order last year. The only problem I had was my text messaging plan. For some odd reason I (and many other people) had to remove their text messaging before order and then add it back after they ordered.

new customer

so what happens if youre going to start a new contract with att?

I am currently a student and can apply a FAN discount.

Would I be able to set all of that up through apple?

You will be able to complete the purchase at Apple but you will need to complete the FAN process with AT&T. In almost all cases, a FAN can be applied to an account within 30 days of contact start.

If you have an email address that matches the FAN lookup process, then you can complete the entire process online with AT&T.

awesome thanks!!! so i'll just go through apple with everything and then can i immediately go to att and set up the FAN discount? or do i have to wait for my contract to register or whatever?

In 11/08 I bought my 3G at an apple store without any issues with my FAN.

Since there was no discount on the iPhone anyway, I didn't see the need to order it through premier.
