For some reason, only my apple tvs will only show the music that I actually bought from itunes. I have not been able to figure this out and I gave up on it a long time back. I have been able to stream my playlists to my apple tvs. After searching, I was not able to find a thread or anything useful from googling around.

I have an ATV3 & ATV4.

I might eventually build a NAS and dump all my music and etc for the apple tvs as well.

Suggestions?

Thanks

My ATV 4K with Beta tvOS13 (Hate It!!) is playing everything audio wise, won't play "home videos", that it should which is several decades of music that I have procured in many ways. I have lots of "board tapes", recordings from the main mixing boards at concerts and all cuts/tracks are playing just fine.

I just spent a while playing with this and there are "ease of use" issues. I can't play from my machine to the ATV although all the parts that let you do things are there, they just don't work. And there are two music apps and each one does things a bit different. I prefer the one that is not the "Laptop" icon. I miss the good ol' days of iTunes when it first came out and Apple didn't want to rule your musical world.

For the longest time I was able to stave off the iTunes evolution. Then one fateful day it updated itself and it's been a downhill climb ever since . . .

So the music shows up in iTunes? You inserted a CD and iTunes imported it? What were your import settings? If you setup a music library in a test plex server on your Mac will the plex apple tv client play the music?

Yes, I imported a bunch of cds on iTunes but it never showed up on my Apple TV. It seems that the music has to be in the iCloud?

you should be able to access your iTunes library from the ATV - check in the "Computers" app on the apple tv - I can access all my music there and even home movies etc.

I like the Movie app above it better too. They've progressively trashed iTunes and I find myself using Amazon Music Unlimited and Pandora all the time. Not only cuz they don't mess with you, but with all the less expensive Echoes I have scattered all over I can have all kinds of music interaction and ease of control of any Echo connected to anyone of my sound systems from any of my tablets, which is nice when I'm outside jammin' and the neighbors make a request . . .

What are your iTunes sharing preferences?

Whenever i use home sharing i never need to touch this pane. In fact, i never used it when i did Home sharing,, and everything work on Apple TV...

True, I have not imported CD's (possibly an exception). Since it worked for me, i them assumed the pane was only useful for shared libraries to other computers like PC/Mac not for AppleTV much , even though at first glace, it may seem like it.

It shares your local iTunes media content with your Apple TV and IOS devices as well as long as they are on the same network.

I encountered the same problem a month or so back. There are apparently two different types of sharing in iTunes. It sounds like the version accessible from Preferences–Sharing is the version to which you and I were accustomed. As long as sharing was turned on here, any devices on the local network could access the iTunes library. AppleTV uses Home Sharing, which is different than the method described above, which I'll refer to as iTunes sharing. You can turn on Home Sharing from the File menu (File–Home Sharing). Depending on your Internet connection and other variables, it can take a bit for Home Sharing to work its magic. Eventually, you should be able to access your iTunes library from your AppleTV using the Computer app.

NB To address your concern above, this does not upload your content to iCloud, as far as I can discern.

Here's an old article about the differences between Sharing (in Preference) and Home Sharing (File/Home Sharing). Not sure how accurate it is.

https://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/confused_about_itunes_home_sharing

If I follow what they are saying the older (Preferences) method allows you to specify what is going to be shared. Home sharing does not have that option. However Home Sharing allows transfers of media from one library to another. The preferences version does not. This means a Home Shared item can still be listened to on an iPhone when there is no network connection. Home Sharing will also transfer new purchase over. If the other system is off it will do the transfer when iTunes comes back up.

It would interesting if someone tested this to see if it is still accurate.

Oh buddy, just the thought of having Amazon products around a house absolutely horrifies me! It is one truly nasty company. There is a reason why these products are incredibly cheap to buy!

Hello friends,

Thank you for your responses. I was originally confused that the "Music" button why it only showed purchased music from itunes. However, when I do click on the orange (computer) button, it does let me browse my itune library including video (e.g., Home Videos as well).

I should have tried that button before. :)
